The Alpine Nation Layering System

The Layering System

Layer Smart,
Move Free.

The right layers work together like a system — wicking moisture away from your skin, trapping warmth where you need it, and shielding you from the elements. Three layers. Infinite conditions.

Why layer instead of one thick jacket?

Layering gives you control. Getting warm on a climb? Remove the mid layer. Wind picks up at the summit? Add the shell. A single heavy jacket can’t adapt — but a system of thin, functional layers lets you stay comfortable in any condition, at any intensity.
💧
Layer 1

Base Layer

The foundation of every outfit. Sits directly against your skin and does the critical job of managing moisture and regulating temperature.

Purpose
Wicks sweat away from skin & regulates body temperature
Materials
Merino wool, Tencel, performance blends

When to use

☀️
Warm days
A merino tee or Tencel top works as a standalone piece. Naturally odor-resistant, so you stay fresh all day.
🏔️
Under layers in cold conditions
The wicking base keeps you dry. Wet skin = cold skin. A proper base layer prevents that clammy feeling during high-output activities.
🛏️
Everyday wear
Merino base layers are soft enough for daily wear and don’t need washing after every use. Performance meets comfort.
Pro tip: Avoid cotton as a base layer. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it against your skin, making you cold and clammy. Merino wool or Tencel will keep you dry and warm.
🔥
Layer 2

Mid Layer

The warmth engine. Traps body heat in dead-air pockets while letting moisture from your base layer pass through and escape.

Choose your insulation

☁️
Fleece
Versatile
Lightweight, breathable, quick-drying. Ideal for high-output activities where you’re generating heat. Stays warm even when damp.
❄️
Down / Insulated
Maximum warmth
Best warmth-to-weight ratio available. Pack it small, wear it big. Perfect for cold, dry conditions and low-output activities like belaying or resting.
🧳
Wool / Knit Sweaters
Everyday
Natural temperature regulation, great breathability, beautiful style. Ideal for casual use, travel, and light outdoor activities in cool weather.

When to use

🏔️
Cool to cold conditions
When the temperature drops below ~15°C, add a mid layer over your base. The colder it gets, the warmer the mid layer should be.
🚶
Variable intensity
Fleece for fast hiking, down for standing still. Match insulation weight to your activity level — you want warmth without overheating.
🌪️
Layer 3

Outer Layer / Shell

Your shield against the elements. Blocks wind, repels rain and snow, while letting internal moisture escape so you don’t cook inside your own jacket.

Understanding protection levels

DWR Coating
Light rain
A water-repellent finish applied to the outer fabric. Water beads up and rolls off. Great for light showers and drizzle, but not sustained heavy rain.
✓ Lightweight & breathable
✓ Good for active use
✗ Not for heavy rain
Waterproof Membrane
Full protection
A laminated membrane (like Gore-Tex) that’s fully waterproof while allowing water vapor to escape. Your fortress against sustained rain and snow.
✓ Fully waterproof
✓ Wind-proof
✓ Breathable (varies by membrane)

When to use

🌀
Wind, rain, or snow
Whenever the elements are a factor. Even on dry but windy days, a shell blocks windchill and preserves the warmth from your mid layer.
⛰️
Exposed terrain & altitude
Above the treeline, weather changes fast. Always carry a shell in your pack — even if the forecast looks clear. It weighs almost nothing and can save the day.
Breathability matters: A shell that doesn’t breathe traps sweat inside, soaking your mid layer and making you cold. Look for shells with high breathability ratings for active use.
