Autumn Hiking must-haves

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, autumn becomes an ideal season for hiking. The vibrant foliage and cooler temperatures make it the perfect time to hit the trails. However, dressing appropriately is key to ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience. In this blog post, we'll explore a versatile and effective clothing ensemble for autumn hiking to make sure you get the most out of your time outdoors. Here are some of our autumn must-haves.

1. The Merino Base Layer

The foundation of your autumn hiking attire should start with a high-quality merino wool base layer. Merino wool is an excellent choice because it offers exceptional temperature regulation, moisture-wicking properties, and odor resistance. A merino base layer will keep you warm when the temperature drops, even when you start to break a sweat.

2. Merino Hiking Socks

Don't overlook the importance of quality hiking socks. Merino wool hiking socks are a game-changer, especially for hiking in cooler weather. Here's why they're a must:

Temperature Regulation: Merino wool naturally regulates temperature, ensuring your feet stay warm when it's chilly and cool when it's hot.

Moisture Management: These
socks are great at wicking away moisture, keeping your feet dry and preventing discomfort. They'll even keep your feet warm if they get wet!

Comfort and Cushioning: Merino
wool socks provide exceptional cushioning and comfort, reducing the risk of blisters during your hike.

3. Technical Hoody

A lightweight technical hoody is an essential part of your autumn hiking wardrobe. Our AP1 hoody is the perfect choice, as it provides exceptional warmth, while taking up very little space (and weight) in your backpack. Since autumn is all about layering, it's great worn over your merino base layer for added warmth, or on its own on milder autumn days.

4. Technical pants

Autumn weather can be unpredictable, so versatile clothing is key. Technical hiking pants made from breathable, moisture-wicking materials are a must. Our Altitude hiking pants allow for maximum freedom of movement, are water resistant and will provide you with the extra warmth you need on chillier days.

5. Hiking leggings

Leggings are sometimes overlooked, but nonetheless a very valuable addition to your hiking wardrobe. They're the synonym for comfort and are great as a stand-alone piece on warmer autumn days. They can also be worn under your hiking pants, and are perfect for chilly mornings or high-altitude hikes. Choose between our Summit leggings and our Rise Thermo leggings for some extra warmth.

Additional tips

  • Layering: Autumn weather can change quickly, so dressing in layers allows you to adapt to varying conditions. You can easily add or remove layers as needed.
  • Accessories: Don't forget a hat, gloves, and a scarf or neck gaiter to keep your extremities warm and protect against wind chill.
  • Footwear: Choose waterproof or water-resistant hiking boots with good traction for muddy and wet trails.
  • Backpack: Invest in a comfortable, well-fitting backpack to carry your essentials, including extra clothing layers, food, and water.
